Juan Bernardo Cantu III, who goes by Bernardo Cantu, a recent MFA-Drawing & Painting graduate from UNT, is featured in edition #90 of New American Paintings, and an artist in the 2011 Texas Biennial. He currently is an adjunct art instructor at University of North Texas in Denton, as well Mountain View Community College in Dallas.
Bernardo is a third generation Mexican-American who was born seven miles from the Tex-Mex border in Weslaco,TX. He grow up mainly in South Texas and also lived partially in Washington D.C during the early-mid 80's. Bernardo's body of work delivers a socially significant message as it explores questions of cultural identity, tears through barriers, stretches limits and creates vast new possibilities. He views his work as product of a larger decolonizing enterprise, that functions from a mentality of what Walter Mignolo calls border gnosis; knowledge developed at the borderland, that takes form at the margins of the modern Western world. He lives in Denton, Texas.

Bernardo Cantu will be featured in the 16th Young Latino Artist's Exhibition - "Thought Cloud".
The show opens on June 17 and runs through September 25 at Mexic-Arte Museum in Austin Texas.

Bernardo Cantu has been selected to be in the 2011 Texas Biennial. The Texas Biennial is an annual group exhibition that provides “an independent survey of contemporary Texas art”, held primarily in Austin, TX. The Texas Biennial is an opportunity to investigate current art-making in Texas and promote the incredible innovation happening within the state of Texas. New York based art historian Virginia Rutledge is this year's curator. "Today, students of the College of Visual Arts and Design will be able to know what their professors do outside of school.

The Annual Faculty and Staff Exhibition will showcase art work created by the faculty and staff of the CVAD.

“The exhibition features a variety of art media and subjects, and includes both abstract and representative imagery,” said Tracee Robertson, director of exhibitions for UNT’s art program.

The exhibition opened Tuesday and will be open today from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.

Admission is free to the general public.

The gallery also displays art from UNT alumni who are currently working as adjunct professors in the CVAD.

“The Ark of the Naguals,” a mixed-media piece by UNT alumnus Bernardo Cantu, features colorful beads, tangled wires and a L.E.D. marquee with a cycling message.

Other points of interest include portions of an installation piece called the “McMuseum of Anthropological Archaeology,” created by James Thurman of the art studio faculty."

The curatorial focus of the 2009 graduate student exhibition is based on the notions of recovery and reinvention. These two words have been popular with political pundits of late as global markets fail and recover and as far-sighted leaders encourage a paradigm shift toward the reinvention of attitudes, and in turn, in modes of production.

While the stimulus which informs and drives these artists varies from person to person, each artist traverses the highs and lows inherent in their individual systems of production and therefore they may falter, recover, discover and reinvent as they develop and progress.
The term "recovery" refers to the discovery and reclamation of personal symbolism, of cultural heritage, of artistic identity and of familial memory. The notion of "reinvention" refers to the reevaluation of artistic source and the influence of that source on the artist’s productive trajectory.

The elements of recovery and reinvention as described above appear in the works selected for exhibition this summer. This year’s show includes works by Julie Barnofski, Bernardo Cantu, Mariko Frost, Bethany Gouldin, Karen Hamilton, Tom Leininger, Murielle White and Sarah Williams.
This annual exhibition features recent works in various media by artists enrolled in the graduate studio art and design programs at the College of Visual Arts and Design. The exhibition is curated by UNT Art Gallery staff.
